When homeowners plan a shower, one of the first forks in the road is the surround: prefabricated acrylic or custom tile. Both can make a perfectly good shower, and both have real trade-offs. As a crew that builds custom tile showers but has seen plenty of acrylic units too, here is an honest comparison so you can pick what fits your home and budget.
Acrylic surrounds: fast and affordable
An acrylic surround is a molded unit, sometimes one piece, sometimes a few panels, that installs quickly. Its strengths are real:
- Lower cost in both material and labor.
- Fast installation, often a day or two, because there is no tile to set or grout to cure.
- No grout lines to clean, which means less routine maintenance.
The downsides: acrylic is limited in looks and sizes, it can scratch, stain, or dull over the years, and a big one-piece unit can be awkward to fit into an existing bathroom. Because the unit itself is the water barrier, everything rides on a clean installation and well-sealed seams. It is a sensible choice for rentals, tight budgets, or a quick refresh.
Tile surrounds: custom and built to last
A tile shower is built in place, so it can be any size, shape, and style, which is exactly why homeowners choose it. The pros:
- Fully custom, any layout, niche, bench, or curbless entry, in porcelain, stone, or marble.
- Durable and long-lasting, a well-built tile shower can last decades.
- Higher resale appeal, tile reads as the premium option to buyers.
- Repairable, a damaged tile can be replaced without redoing the whole surround.
The trade-offs are honest ones: tile costs more, takes longer to install, and grout needs occasional sealing and cleaning. It also has to be built correctly, which brings us to the part that matters most.
The waterproofing difference
This is the detail most homeowners miss. With acrylic, the unit is the waterproofing, so a proper install and sealed seams are everything. With tile, the tile and grout are not the water barrier, a separate waterproofing membrane behind the tile is. Grout is porous, so a tile shower without a proper membrane and sloped pan will eventually let water into the walls. Done right, though, a tiled shower over a tested membrane is one of the most reliable, longest-lasting showers you can own. We explain the whole system in what makes a shower truly waterproof.
How to choose
Go acrylic if your priority is speed and budget, or the shower is in a rental or a space you will not keep long. Go tile if you want a custom look, the best durability and resale value, and a shower built specifically for your bathroom, and you are willing to invest a bit more up front for it. In our experience, most homeowners remodeling their own long-term home lean tile once they see the difference in person.
