Showers are right in our name, and custom shower remodeling in Tampa Bay is the project homeowners ask us about more than any other. A dated fiberglass surround or a leaking tile stall is one of the few upgrades that improves your daily routine and your home's value at the same time. This guide walks through how the project really works, so you know what you are paying for and what to look for before you hire anyone.
Start with how you actually use the space
Before tile and fixtures, think about function. Is this the primary shower you use every morning, or a guest bath that mostly sits idle? Does anyone in the home need a low or curbless entry now or in the next few years? Do you want a bench, a hand-held wand, a large niche for bottles, or a rain head? These decisions shape the framing and plumbing, so they are far cheaper to make on paper than after demo.
The steps of a custom shower remodel
A well-run shower remodel follows the same order every time:
- Design and selections. We measure, then lock in layout, tile, niche placement, fixtures, and glass. Deciding everything up front is what keeps the job on schedule.
- Demo. The old surround or stall comes out. This is often where hidden water damage behind an old fiberglass unit shows up, which is exactly why doing it right matters.
- Framing and the pan. We frame the opening and build a pan that slopes evenly to the drain. A flat or poorly pitched pan is the number-one cause of standing water.
- Waterproofing. A continuous membrane goes over the backer board and pan, sealed at every seam and corner, and is checked before any tile.
- Tile and set. Wall and floor tile are hand-set with leveling clips for flat walls and a floor that drains cleanly.
- Glass and finish. Fixtures and glass go in, then a detailed walk-through with care instructions.
What actually drives the cost
There is no honest flat price for a custom shower, because a few choices move the number more than anything else. The biggest drivers are the size of the shower, the tile you pick, and whether the layout or plumbing changes. Large-format porcelain, natural stone, and intricate patterns cost more in both material and labor than a simple subway layout. Moving the drain or valve, adding a curbless entry, or upgrading to frameless glass all add scope. Because of that, we quote every shower in person and in writing, with no open-ended pricing. For a sense of how selections and layout ripple through a larger project, our bathroom remodeling cost and timeline guide breaks down the same factors at room scale.
The part you will never see, and why it matters most
The single most important element of any shower is the waterproofing hidden behind the tile. Grout is porous, and in Florida's humidity a shower that was not waterproofed correctly can rot framing and subfloor quietly for years. A proper shower has a continuous membrane over a sloped pan, sealed and tested before tile goes on. We cover this in depth in what makes a shower truly waterproof, and it is the first question you should ask any contractor.
Questions to ask before you hire
Good answers to these will tell you a lot: How do you waterproof, and do you inspect it before tiling? Is the crew in-house or subcontracted? Is the quote fixed and in writing? What warranty covers the workmanship? We keep our tile work and waterproofing in-house, quote a fixed price up front, and back every shower with a 5-year workmanship warranty.
